Tim Stevens, the UK Body Contouring Sales Manager at Cynosure, discusses SculpSure—the world’s first FDA-cleared laser treatment for non-invasive lipolysis of the flanks and abdomen

SculpSureQ: Can you elaborate on the controlled light-based technology behind SculpSure?

A: SculpSure uses a unique 1060nm diode laser, this energy is delivered in a patented pattern that combines heating of fat with cooling of the skin (Proprietary energy modulation). The wavelength has not been used before in this way and was chosen because of its high affinity for lipid rich tissue and low absorption in water. Therefore the laser energy passes through the skin without heating it and focuses purely on fat, this is something conventional heat based treatments for fat have struggled with in the past.

Q: What indications are ideal for SculpSure?

A: SculpSure effectively targets and reduces unwanted subcutaneous fat, it works most effectively on patients with a BMI less than 30 and can be used on any body area where the applicators can get good contact. These include the abdomen, flanks, male chest, bra area, arms, thighs and knees.

Q: What is the treatment protocol?

A: The treatment is a single 25 minute session where the diode fires into the area targeted. This one treatment gives a fat reduction of 24% of the tissue effected. Further treatments of the same area can be carried out in as little as four to six weeks if needed.

During the treatment the patient gives feedback and the physician alters the settings to make sure that the treatment is comfortable and effective.

Q: How many treatments are recommended for optimum results?

A: This varies depending on the patients needs. For many patients a single 25 minute treatment, in an area such as the flanks, is sufficient. Treatment plans are created in consultation based on patient assessment.

Q: How long after treatment are results apparent?

A: It takes 6-12 weeks to see optimum results
